Bandera Latina's new album Todo es Amor ( Everything is love)
was finally released after being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly, it release coincided with the passing away of Bandera Latina's percussionist Willem Mustamu who's contributions can be heard throughout the album.
Eclectic, is probably the best word to describe this new album. With jazzy swing tracks such as 'Les Feuilles Mortes' ( Autumn Leaves) and 'Summerfly', Latin Classics like 'La Colegiala' and 'Besame Mucho', but also great Italian songs 'Bella Ciao' and 'Malafemmena'.
These songs are complemented by four songs written by Bandera Latina's own Salvatore Giuseppe Sichi: 'Chica Latina', 'Gli Occhi Tuoi', 'Oohlala' and the eponimous 'Todo es Amor'.
Of the covers, there are three that merit special attention because they constitute such departures from their originals.
First there is 'Summerfly' which was turned from the Country/pop original by Maura O'Connell was turned into a jazz swing. Then there is ''Till there was You', a song made famous by the Beatles which got reworked into a slow jazz swing. Finally, the biggest make-over was reserved for a Gipsy Kings song. Keeping in mind that Bandera Latina started in 1998 as a Gipsy Kings cover band this loving tribute makes more sense. Their beautiful song Trista Pena was remade into a Big Band Jazz ballad, complete with horn section.
